Various ramblings about Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter-Fanfiction, Bujold's Vorkosigan series of books, and Star Trek-books:

The 10th of December is just a day away and with it the release of the Return of the King-SEE... I'd say it's not too hard to imagine what I'll be doing tomorrow. ;) Bad thing is that I really don't have the time to watch it right away since I have another exam just on Monday and another on the 23rd (wouldn't that be a nice present for Christmas if that one goes well???) - but it's going to be soooo hard to contain my curiosity about the added scenes. *sighs* Well, only until Monday, then some friends come over and we'll watch it together. :) It's just a shame that I know Fellowship and 2 Towers almost by heart and my mind starts to wander whenever I'm watching those 2... In a couple of months I'm going to do an 11hour SEE-marathon, though, no matter what. *g*

On another note... I'm really into Harry Potter-fanfiction and one of my favourite stories is Aspen in the Sunlight's "A Year Like None Other". I'm not sure what the admins of ff.net thought when they removed that wonderful, complex story from their archives - well, *if* they thought anything at all. Considering all those ridiculous stories full of spelling and grammatical mistakes, not to mention meagre to non-existing plots that apparently don't get reported I rather doubt their judgment. Some of the wanna-be authors on that site must really have a jealous and mean streak to report perfectly acceptable stories just because they themselves can't come up with something of equally high quality and thus don't get as much praise and attention as in this case Aspen. I'd wish, though, that the admins would offer the authors a chance to defend their work instead of just removing the story - and that those who report stories are required to present evidence for the alledged "abuse".

I'm totally hooked on the Vorkosigan-series of books by Lois McMaster Bujold at the moment, complex stories with believable main characters. I still have many books left in the series but I'm already on the lookout for the release-date of the next installment... maybe I shouldn't read the existing parts quite so fast in order for them to last longer. *g*

For quite many years I've been an avid reader of Star Trek-novels as well. Maybe I read too many ST-novels in too short a time but somehow now they don't interest me that much anymore. I still follow "The New Frontier" by Peter David but otherwise there's not a single book ST-wise in sight that screams at me "Buy me, buy me". And just 2 days ago I learned that the follow-up trilogy to my 2 favourite TOS-books has been cancelled. In my opinion no one can write Spock as well as AC Crispin (Sherman & Schwartz come in second in this regard) - so imagine my disappointment when I heard that the Yesterday-books won't ever be continued... *sighs* There are simply too many of those mini-ST-verses that suddenly popped up a couple of years ago and far too few books that simply follow the adventures of the old crews. There are:

* The New Frontier - I loved it up until Restoration but nowadays it seems as if everything is solved by fists, sex or a mixture of both but no longer through talk and diplomacy which is one of the strengths of Star Trek... but it's still an enjoyable ride since I like Captain Calhoun quite a bit. *g*

* Stargazer - Loved Reunion quite much - but since this was turned into a series it just got more boring with every new installment.

* DS9-relaunch - definitely second after TNF in my list to pick up if ever I get interested again. Complex continuation of DS9 with interesting new characters.

* VOY-relaunch - sadly, since VOY turned into a 2 women-show it lost quite much appeal to me. Not to mention that Janeway is the saddest excuse for a female captain possible. Her moodswings and irrational decisions scream PMS all the time. I don't know what the writers tried to accomplish by turning her into the embodiment of every male prejudice against women in leading positions. And Seven... could somebody please explain to me why an ex-Borg should walk around in high-heels and push-up-bras? I gave the first 2 books a try last year but they simply don't have the depth of the DS9-relaunch and drag out quite a bit. So unless I feel myself out of other more challenging reading material (not going to happen in the near future) I won't pick up this series.

* SCE - I read the novelization of the first 8 e-books and I haven't found more uninteresting and simply unappealing characters as those. So a definite no to that.

* a series about a Klingon ship and Worf... NO! I hate Klingons - or more precisely I hate Worf with a passion.

* Titan - Riker and Troi's new command after "Nemesis"... will be out next year - maybe I'll even give it a try (just in order to be able to complain of course. *g*)

* Shatner-verse - please spare me that crap. Wonderful, omnipotent and still very much alive Kirk to the rescue... Was I the only one who was actually glad to see Kirk die? I never liked him, only in his interaction with Spock but he as a character... pah, typical male of the 60's (and unfortunately the early 21st century still).

So with 24 books/year and a few hardcovers there isn't much room left for novels outside of these mini-verses. Unfortunately.

Well, I have to get back to my books now... *urgh*
